When you read the title or see the game’s cover artwork you would probably conclude that Brok the InvestiGator was a point and click mystery game staring a talking anthropomorphic Gator. You’d be partially correct. However, this game is much more than that general description.

Let’s talk about it.

Narrative:

In Brok the InvestiGator you play as Brok. A flat broke step dad who is also an private eye. Your hired to the on a smaller scale job that turns out to be a bigger large scale mystery. When your game centers around a mystery it’s important to nail the story aspect. Thankfully this game success in that regard. It’s a story that has some cliché mystery elements to it, but it’s an intriguing enough tale to hook most mystery fans.

Gameplay:

Here is where things get interesting regarding the game. You’d think this game was your standard point and click game, but it’s also a decent beat em game. In Brok the
InvestiGator, you can switch between a point and click stance and the beat em up stance.

The beat em up gameplay is a bit on the simplistic side compared to games like Streets of Rage, Last Beat Enhanced and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredders Revenge.
Those games offer quite a bit more depth when it comes to combos and enemy variety.

Brok the InvestiGator controls feature just the attack button, the movements, a jump attack, and a super attack. Despite the simplicity, this game is very enjoyable when it
switches to the beat up moments.

Art style and Soundtrack:

This game has a 2D old school cartoon art style. The design reminds me of the 90’s cartoons I watched growing up. Every area of the game looks really good and detailed.

The soundtrack is a mixed bag. Nothing about it really stands out, but it accents the game’s light cyberpunk elements.

Cons:

I’m reviewing the Xbox version of the game and while the point and click aspects are playable there are times when the pointer isn’t as precise as desired. It’s not the end of the world, but there were moments when items in the game were beside each other and the pointer hit the unintended item.

Another feature in the game that might turn gamers off is the game’s hint system. Instead of built-in hints on where to go or what to do you collect ads in the game and cash those in for in-game hints. It’s a unique concept, but you have to find the Ads while exploring the world. This will speak to gamers who like item collecting in games, but will turn off those that dislike that activity.
