The Last of Us Part 1 Review (PS5): A Definitive Remake Worth the Price?
When The Last of Us Part 1 was announced, many gamers, including myself, asked the same question: “Do we really need another remake or remastered version of The Last of Us?” After all, the remastered edition had already been released in 2014, and it still ran beautifully on the PS4 and PS5. Despite being one of my top five favorite games, I wasn’t sure if this new version was necessary. Yet, despite my doubts, I couldn’t resist the pull. As the familiar guitar notes echoed in, I knew The Last of Us had me hooked once again. But the real question remained: Is this the definitive way to experience this iconic game?
Should You Pay $70 for The Last of Us Part 1?
Let’s dive in and answer that. For those of you who’ve never played The Last of Us, I have two things to say: First, play this game—it’s an unforgettable masterpiece. Second, I’m secretly jealous of you for getting to experience it for the first time. But with a $70 price tag, is this the best way to dive into The Last of Us for the first time, or even revisit the journey?
The Best Way to Play The Last of Us?
One thing I can confidently say is that this version of The Last of Us is undeniably the best way to experience the game. And it’s not even close. The haptic feedback on the PS5 and lightning-fast load times elevate the overall experience significantly. But the biggest leap forward is in the visual upgrades. Characters’ facial expressions are more nuanced than ever before—showing subtle emotions like worry, tension, and frustration without needing to say a word. You can almost feel the weight of a moment just by looking at a character’s face.
The environments are jaw-dropping as well. What once felt like blurry, distant details now stands out in crisp clarity. Textures, shadows, and landmarks such as decaying cities and flowing rivers all feel lifelike. Even the infected look more realistic, making the world feel richer and more immersive.
A Story That Stands the Test of Time
For returning players, you’ll find the same gripping story you know and love. If you’ve never played it, here’s a quick rundown: You control Joel, a battle-hardened survivor in a world ravaged by a zombie-like outbreak. He’s tasked with smuggling Ellie, a teenage girl, to a group called the Fireflies. What follows is an emotional, harrowing journey that changes them both in ways they could never have imagined.
While The Last of Us may be set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with typical zombie elements, it’s the depth of the characters, particularly Joel and Ellie, that truly sets the game apart. Their evolution as individuals, as well as their slowly developing bond, is what makes this game truly special. It’s the way they react to the world around them, grow emotionally, and form a believable connection that elevates the narrative beyond just a video game plot. You don’t just see them as characters—you see them as real people.
Gameplay: Tension, Stealth, and Accessibility
The gameplay remains as thrilling as ever. Combat feels deliberate and meaningful, and every action carries weight. The game excels in stealth sequences and tense encounters that leave you holding your breath. Beyond the action, The Last of Us Part 1 also introduces an impressive array of accessibility options, allowing a wider audience to enjoy the game, including a new speed run mode and permanent death mode for those craving a challenge.
Verdict: Is The Last of Us Part 1 Worth It?
Now, to answer the big questions: Should you pay $70 for The Last of Us Part 1? If you’re a fan of the game or have been holding off on playing it, I’d say the improvements make it worth the price. However, if you’re on the fence about buying it again, I’d recommend waiting for a sale to get the most value for your money.
As for whether The Last of Us Part 1 is a great single-player experience—the answer is a resounding “yes.” This game is a true masterpiece, offering one of the best single-player experiences in gaming history. Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, The Last of Us remains an essential title for any gamer.
