The Indie Power Rankings
The games shaping the single-player indie experience
The SPE Indie Power Rankings are our ongoing editorial record of the indie games that stand out, surprise us, challenge us, and give us a reason to keep playing. Each year, we review and evaluate the single-player indie experiences that deserve attention, then rank them according to the standards of The Single Player Experience. From the games dominating the conversation to the hidden gems that deserve a larger audience, the rankings are designed to help you discover what is worth playing now and remember what was worth playing then.
What Are the Indie Power Rankings?
The Indie Power Rankings are the centerpiece of SPE’s coverage of independent games. They are designed to do more than simply identify which games received the highest scores. The rankings create a running editorial record of the indie single-player experiences that we believe are worth discovering, discussing, and remembering.
Every year brings hundreds of independent games, and no player has the time or money to experience all of them. SPE exists in part to help narrow that field. Through our reviews, we spend time with these games, evaluate what they accomplish, consider where they fall short, and ultimately determine where they belong within the larger landscape of the year’s indie releases.
The result is a living ranking that changes as new games are discovered and reviewed, followed by a permanent yearly archive once the year is complete.
More Than a List

DISCOVERY
Find your next experience.
The indie game landscape is filled with experiences that can easily disappear beneath the noise of major releases. The rankings give those games a place to be discovered by highlighting experiences that we believe deserve attention, whether they come from established independent studios or developers creating something remarkable on a smaller scale.

CRITICISM
Understand why a game stands out.
A ranking means more when you understand the reasoning behind it. Every game considered for the rankings is evaluated through the SPE Review System, giving readers more than a position on a list. Our reviews explain what the game does well, where it struggles, and how successfully its individual pieces come together as a complete single-player experience.

How the Rankings Work
The Indie Power Rankings are built from the same philosophy that guides every SPE review. We begin with the individual game experience, evaluate it through the SPE Review System, and then consider how it compares with the other games we’ve reviewed within its ranking year.
The rankings are not intended to suggest that one number can completely define a game. Instead, they provide a clear editorial snapshot of how the experiences we have covered compare with one another.
The Three-Step Process

REVIEW
We play the game.
Before a game can become part of the SPE rankings, we need to experience it ourselves. Our reviews examine the game’s overall experience through areas such as Impression, Gameplay, Narrative, Pros & Cons, and the final Single Player Experience.

SCORE
We evaluate the experience.
Each reviewed game receives a Review Score from 1–10 and a Passion Score from 0–100. The Review Score represents our critical assessment of the game’s quality, while the Passion Score represents our personal connection to the experience.

RANK
We determine where it belongs.
Once a game has been reviewed, it can be placed within its ranking year alongside the other eligible games covered by SPE. Rankings are ultimately determined by the SPE scoring system, with the written reviews providing the context behind the numbers.

What Games Qualify for the Rankings?
The Indie Power Rankings are focused on independent single-player experiences. To be considered for the rankings, a game must fit the editorial focus of SPE and have received a full release rather than remaining in Early Access.
Our focus is not limited to one genre, visual style, platform, or development team size. Indie games can be small narrative adventures, ambitious role-playing games, strategy experiences, immersive simulations, horror games, action titles, experimental projects, or something that does not fit neatly into an existing category.
What matters is the experience.
SPE is particularly interested in games that offer something worth discussing, whether that comes from their mechanics, storytelling, creativity, ambition, atmosphere, design, or the simple fact that they deliver an experience that players may remember long after they have finished playing.

The Current Rankings
2026 Indie Power Rankings
The 2026 rankings are the current chapter of the SPE Indie Power Rankings. As the year unfolds, we’re discovering, reviewing, and ranking the independent single-player experiences that are making an impression on us. From ambitious new worlds and inventive gameplay systems to intimate stories and unexpected experiments, this year’s rankings are a snapshot of the indie games that are demanding our attention right now.
Why We Rank Indie Games
The indie game industry moves faster than most players can reasonably keep up with. New games arrive every week, major releases compete for attention, and countless smaller projects can disappear before they ever find the audience they deserve. The Indie Power Rankings are SPE’s answer to that problem.
We want to create a place where players can discover games outside the usual release cycle and where independent developers can have their work evaluated alongside the other experiences competing for players’ limited time. The rankings are not intended to declare which games everyone should enjoy. Taste will always be personal, and the games that connect most strongly with one player may not connect with another. Instead, the rankings provide our editorial perspective and give readers a starting point for discovering their next single-player experience.
If a player finds one game through SPE that they would never have discovered otherwise, the rankings have done their job.
What You Can Expect From SPE
The Indie Power Rankings are built around the same principles that guide the rest of SPE: honesty, transparency, curiosity, and a genuine interest in the games we cover.
We will not pretend that every game is great simply because it is independent. We will not overlook significant problems because a game came from a small team. At the same time, we will not dismiss a game because it lacks the budget, scale, or marketing power of a major release.
Our responsibility is to play the games, understand what they are trying to accomplish, explain where they succeed and where they fall short, and give readers enough information to decide whether the experience belongs on their own list.
